A female stump-tail macaque named Pearl and a male rhesus macaque named Zach were brought to Mindy's Memory by the Animal Rescue League of Iowa on 2 February 2005. The two monkeys were part of a December 2004 confiscation in a major animal abuse case in Iowa.
Zach and Pearl were seized, along with more than 90 other animals from a rural residence northeaset of Sioux City, Iowa. They were found living in feces and urine-soaked wire cages with no food, no water and no adequate shelter. Fourteen dead animals were also found.
As shown in the photos on the right, Zach was being kept in a small live-animal trap, like the type that is used to capture feral cats. It was totally rusted and Zach had no room to move. Pearl was in a tiny rusty wire cage with a feces-covered blanket. Peal had been fed only Nine Lives canned cat food and was bone thin.
I started both monkeys on a new diet, and although the Animal Rescue Leauge of Iowa had been feeding both monkeys nutritious food, Pearl showed she needed greens in her diet by eating them very quickly when offered broccoli and lettuce. These have been added to her regular daily diet, along with mealworms, which she really loves! Sweet potatoes were enjoyed by both monkeys and much lip smacking was heard!
